Stone Casting Techniques: Scagliola

What is Scagliola?

Scagliola is made to take on the apearance exotic stone. It can display subtle veins of minerals, or be a colorful pallet with streaks and patches of varying color. Instead of stone, it is actually made up of plaster, gypsum, and pigments. The real mineral pigments and gypsum in Scagliola give it a natural appearance. Scagliola is a historic material, with techniques in its fabrication dating all the way back to the late 17th century. Marble was immensely popular in roman architecture and art, and scagliola was invented as a means to replicate the appearances of the exotic stones used in those times.

Above on the left is a sample of scagliola, originating from a building BAC recently did work on. The right is our approximation to match it for restoration of the buildings interior.
