Material Introduction

At Buffalo Architectural Casting, we celebrate the inherent beauty and unique character found in natural variations within our cast products. Each piece we create tells its own story, distinguished by subtle differences in texture, shade, and pattern that are the hallmark of genuine craftsmanship. These variations are not imperfections; they are the essence of authenticity and individuality, ensuring that every product is a one-of-a-kind work of art. By embracing these natural distinctions, we deliver architectural elements that add depth, personality, and timeless elegance to any space, reflecting the true artistry of nature and the skill of our artisans.

  • Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) is a lightweight cast material typically used to create replacement units for sculptural terracotta and limestone.

BAC differs from other cast mantel fabricators in that we cast in lightweight GFRC rather than in solid cast stone. Our finished product is less than an inch thick, and weighs only about 15lbs per square foot. With the feel and appearance of natural stone. GFRC offers superlative durability and longevity.

GFRC can be fabricated to achieve a wide variety of finishes. Buffalo Architectural Casting does not maintain stock finish colors/textures for GFRC (Restoration), as each restoration project necessitates a custom color and texture match. Mix designs can be developed to achieve a finish which replicates terracotta, natural stone, cast stone, and other historic materials.

  • Limestone is one of the oldest building materials in the world. GFRC was originally conceived as a higher preforming replacement for limestone on historic buildings.

Smooth, with minimal variation in color. Rough to the touch. Sleek.

  • The Ancient Romans mined Travertine for building temples, monuments, and aqueducts.

BAC uses as semi-dry GFRC mix to create natural Travertine texture.

Pitted to the touch, with variation in color. Warm. Dramatic.
